Book Cover

Can you tell us a little about how you started writing; was it something you have always wanted to do?
K: My mom was a writer and a true “book-a-holic”. She started me reading before I started school, and the writing part came quickly after. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to write since then!

Who or what has been your biggest influence as a writer?
K: When I was younger, I wanted to write like Barbara Cartland. THEN….later it was Christine Feehan. She can bring life to a character that will cause a reader to experience every facet and emotion right along with him or her. I have lots of favorite writers, but I have to say that an author who can wring emotions from a character and make the reader feel it, tops the list! I only hope I can do it as well! (grin)

Your work is very popular with readers and reviewers; how does it feel to have such positive recognition for your work?

K: It STILL stuns me! And it’s the biggest honor! Every time I get a Review or a compliment it feels like the very FIRSTt time, and means as much to me as the last one. Sometimes Im doing the Snoopy Happy Dance so much that I get dizzy! I can’t say THANKS enough to my readers.

What do you consider to be the key elements of a great story?

K: How well the readers associate with the characters. The Plot is essential, of course, but it’s the characters who make the story work. So, I’d definitely say Characterization.

Could you tell us a little about how you develop your characters? Who has been your favorite character to write? The most challenging?

K: Since the Plot actually pops into my head first, I then develop characters that would “work” in that particular situation. I give them their strengths and weaknesses according to what they’re going to have to face. Favorite character? Just one? LOL! I guess then I’d have to say Lyon Savage (Under A Shifter’s Moon). I’ve had him (and the heroine Kitlene) in my head for years before I finally found the “right” story for them. No other characters bothered me as much! (ggg) The most challenging was Drake Domitaine (Her Heart His Soul). He was the most unusual of my heroes — he was half Angel and half Demon — and that made giving him strengths and weaknesses that showed each side of him. I must have succeeded okay, because my readers say he’s one of the most unique heroes around!

Please tell us about the projects you are currently working on; what can readers expect to see in the coming months?

K: I’m working on a different concept (for me) this time. My heroine is a Witch but she has a serious glitch in her powers and it’s going to cause havoc in so many ways. The hero is human but will be turned into a shapeshifter/were — and that’s going to be a big challenge. It’s also going to be a part Time Travel. I’m into 18,000 words now and STILL wondering how I’m going to pull this together! lol!

Where can readers find out what’s new and how can they contact you?

K: My website www.authorkari.com on my Books page, and I have an Author’s Newsletter where I send announcements. Contact me at: authorkari@yahoo.com to sign up.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 5 things would you
have with you?

K: 1. LOADS of books! (does a huge box of them count as one item?) 2. my laptop with loads of batteries! 3. Cell phone with loads of batteries. 4. Sunscreen. 5. Tent. LOL—can you tell I like my comforts?

What is your favorite way to relax after a hard day working and
writing?

K: I’m a professed book-a-holic so I love to read when I get the chance (which isnt often enough), and I watch TV. As long as I’m not “thinking hard” about writing, etc, then I consider that to be relaxing no matter what I’m doing!

What is the one era you would love to go visit and why?

K: I’m a born Southerner so I have to most definitely say the Old South BEFORE the days of the Civil War. Just to see the serene beauty, the plantation homes, the peaceful way of life that existed then. The Heroes were born full of Chivalry and Honor, and the Heroines were strong but all-so-feminine.

Excerpt:
She’d just threatened him, and he liked it. Damn.

He studied her closely. She wasn’t that brave, was she? Someone should have warned her about baiting him. He was still aching with the sexual adrenaline from this morning’s hot, devouring kiss. He already knew his restraint around her wasn’t as strong as he wanted it to be, and if she challenged him it would only make his primal side that more dominant around her. Not good.
He shook his head. “You aren’t serious, are you? You would try that, again?” Placing his hands on his hips he widened his stance. He purposely roughened his tone. “You might have bested my men. Once.” He speared a reprimanding glare in their direction, and then turned his hard stare back on her. “But, kitten, you don’t stand a chance of getting past me.”
He wasn’t surprised at her reaction to his words. He’d instinctively known she’d rise to his challenge. His blood heated instantly, lust and primal emotions swamping him as he watched her stand.
But the look she was spearing him with almost made him wish he hadn’t pushed her. She looked oddly confident. He bit back a groan, suddenly realizing why. If she tried to get past him, he’d have to touch her. And touching her again was the last thing he should ever do. They both knew that, already.
“Would you really physically restrain me, Lyon?”
Damn but her voice was pure silk. He cringed. He was in trouble. He thought fast. “I’ll make you a deal, sweetheart. If you can break out of my hold, without me hurting you, then I’ll let you walk out of here.” He grinned, his thoughts suddenly way-too hot, considering what he was about to do. “Come here.”
He’d have to touch her, but there wasn’t any other way. He realized he was holding his breath as he watched her, and he released it on a long sigh. Her eyes darkened and she chewed on her full bottom lip. His gut clenched in reaction, heat searing his groin as he watched her mangle that same, soft, sweet lip he’d chewed on for too short a heated moment just hours earlier.
He swore his heart stuttered when he saw the moment she’d made up her mind.

THANKS so much, Raine, for having me here today! I look forward to talking to everyone. I’m on a Dial Up Service so it takes me longer to get in, and too I’ll be here off and on because today is a dialysis day for my dad and I’m his caregiver.
    Anyhoo! Anyone have any questions?

  5. Kari Thomas on November 12th, 2009 3:09 pm

    HI Jane,

(grin) Yes! And I had them in my mind for years before finally coming up with the right story for them. All of my previous five books started out with them as potential h/h for the story BUT I’d have to change it cause it never felt right for those two! Gotta love characters like that!

Amber, you’ve got to stop spilling secrets! LOL!

Just in case anyone is wondering about that….!

Months ago I had an infection in my inner cheek AND Mono. My cheeks were soooo swollen, everyone called me “Chipmunk”. Now, I seem to have this inside knowledge about shapeshifters. Especially chipmunks! LOL!
