When the Condor Returned by Icy Snow Blackstone

When I wrote Earthman’s Bride, I intended it to be a stand alone novel, and that was all. Then, it was accepted by Lyrical Press. And suddenly, it became two books. In Earthman’s Bride, Tusteyan Rebeka Spearman was ordered to marry, then kill, Philip Hamilcar, the Terran governor of her planet. Instead, Rebeka falls in love with her husband and gives him the support he needs to throw off the domination of his uncle Alexander and become a just ruler to her people. She also rejects the love of Darius, the android programmed to protect her and in doing so, causes Darius’ systems to crash, effectively destroying her friend forever and leaving an unemotional mechanical creature in his place. Rebeka never regrets her decision to choose Philip over Darius but she continues to regret losing the creature she considered her dearest friend and confident.

In When the Condor Returns, Philip puts his plans for the Tusteyans into action. With Rebeka’s help, and a re-programmed Darius at his side, he acknowledges his dual heritage from both Earth and Tusteya, that he isn’t a product of one civilization but of both. Calling together the other young men of his generation, he stages a bloodless revolt, and before the original members of the Terran invading party—fathers of the men who have chosen to follow him—know what’s happening, they find themselves confined to their quarters and safely out of the way as he revokes the severe laws enacted upon the people of Tusteya.

Soon, Philip has another danger to face, however. Ignorant of his plans and wondering why his daughter hasn’t already dispatched her husband, Alcin Spearman sends his son Taryn to Ulea to make certain his son-in-law doesn’t survive another day. Upon her brother’s arrival, Rebeka is terrified; she knows Taryn to be a ruthless killer, but Philip manages the impossible. Within a few hours, he wins over his would-be assassin, sending him back to Alcin with news of the many reforms now in place. When Philip learns he’s soon to be a father, he dares face the old lion in his den, taking Rebeka back to her village to inform her father and while there, he not only succeeds in gaining acceptance from the Elius warrior caste but becomes one of them.

So far, Philip has had a pretty good track record of success for a repressed twenty-year-old who only a few months before was under the thumb of an iron-willed guardian. It would appear that Happy Endings abound for Rebeka and Philip, and all the Tusteyans, and then…

…the Condor returns. The Federation explorer comes back to Tusteya expecting to be welcomed by the man they left in charge. Instead, they find his son, refusing to allow them to land and declaring Tusteya free of Terran domination. The commander of the Condor decides there’s only one thing to do…

…fire upon the capitol.

The only weapons the Tusteyans have are the antiquated guns the Earthmen brought with them thirty years before; the Condor is equipped with the latest in offensive battlegear. Now Philip has to make the most difficult decision of his young life as the words he’s been spouting to the Tusteyans about their freedom are put to the test. He knows there’s no way they can win against aggressors with such advanced weaponry. They can only die defending the planet these second generation Earthmen call Home. Philip doesn’t want to die—he has too much to live for…a living wife, a child on the way…

All he has to do to keep them is betray the Tusteyans and let the men from the Condor land. Can he, in all good conscience, do that, after what he’s promised his people?

Thanks for coming by Icy Snow. Your latest release looks really good. How many do you plan for the Earthman series?

Is ther a genre you haven’t done yet but want to in the future?

Right now, there’s just the two but I can feel a story with Darius as the main character starting to evolve. I think writing romances of various types covers enough territory. I’ll let Toni V. Sweeney handle the sci-fi and fantasy.
