Please share with us your path to being published. How long did you write before your first book was published?

I’ve been writing for nearly twenty years; it’s been a passion of mine since I was a child. My road to getting published involved lots of stories written, an erotica piece that transformed into a novel, and meeting lots of wonderful people while writing Star Wars erotica. Needless to say, it wasn’t a straight road!

How many books did you write before the first was published?

About one and a half, both of which I eventually plan to revise and submit somewhere. I finished my first novel when I was 15.

Who was your first publisher? What was the name of your first book?

Aphrodite’s Apples, and it was Blood of the Dark Moon. It’s since been reprinted with Freya’s Bower.

Have you ever finaled or won in a writing contest? If so, which contest(s), which book(s), and which year(s)? Do you feel contests are a good use of your energy and time? Would you recommend that writers enter them? Why or why not?

I’ve never entered a contest, but I have been nominated for various awards, including the Preeditor and Editors polls and LRC. I recommend that writers do whatever they feel is necessary to keep them going on their craft and improve, and if contests help them to do so, so be it!

What is your favorite animal, real or mythical and why?

I’m a big cat person. I’ve always grown up with a cat in the house!  Now that I have my own place, I have two adorable kitties.

If you decided to no longer write, what would you do instead?

I can’t imagine ever not writing, but I would imagine if I didn’t I’d get a lot more reading done!

What are your best promotion tips for other writers? What works best for you?

Talk to people. Socialize. Hang out in interest groups relevant to your stories. And above all else, be real and be yourself.

Where do you get your ideas for your stories?

Dreams and a very interesting Muse!

Where are you published? Where can readers contact you?

I’m currently published with Freya’s Bower and will be with other publishers as soon as I get a few projects finished.

Sneak look into The Oath: Bound (Book 1):

Years ago, Lila pledged herself to the Greek god Dionysus, and the act of devotion changed her entire life. Now, her desire to serve has brought her to the doorstep of a secret society known only as “The Order”. Through sexual magick and ritual submission she can become her truest self and achieve her magickal destiny.

But the trials of the initiation challenge even the strongest of wills. Can Lila’s transformation through erotic servitude bring her closer to fulfilling her dreams?

Bound: Lila begins to learn the importance of the oath she has sworn and what it means to be bound.

Excerpt:
Lila studied him with care. All she saw, with the black painted mask upon his face, were his intense, dark eyes that bored into her skull.

Nervous, she swallowed hard. No turning back.

The gentleman with the white gem grabbed her hair and yanked her head back. Lila sucked in her breath, unable to control the thrill that ran through her body at the rough gesture. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the black-gemmed male take hold of a rather elaborate flogger. From it hung numerous, long strands of thin black leather. With a sharp crack, it struck her side, and she winced. The sound reverberated in the small room. Lightheadedness filled her, and she surveyed her situation. Three men surrounded her and had her tied to what appeared to be two wooden planks in the form of a huge X, and this for the purpose of attaining self-knowledge?

I must be crazy.

    Hi Adrianne,

Thanks for being in the spotlight today. Tell me what inspired th is new series of yours? It is very different than your vampirees series, is it not?

    Raine D.

It’s definitely different, yes. This time I’ve taken certain elements I introduced in book one and I sorta…well, run with them. *grin* Anyone who enjoys tales of magick, erotica, BDSM, and secret societies should check it out.

Each book is a different stage of Lila’s initiation. Book 2, Summoned, will be out next Tuesday. There are three more books in the series, and right now blurbs and covers for each are on my website.

I was inspired by a combination of different sources. Books like the Kushiel series, my own background in studying magick and philosophy–and my Muse handled the rest.

    Wonderful interview, Adrianne!

You don’t seem old enough to be writing for 20 years. (grin)

What else do you have planned Adrianne? Anything new in 2009 coming from you?

*grins* Thanks Marci! Yeah, I started when I was ten, and that’s definitely twenty years.

    :D

Raine, I have LOTS of stuff! Books 3, 4, and 5 in The Oath series will be out over the next couple of months plus Blood and Spice, the sequel to Blood and Mint Chocolates. I’ve also got Book 2 in the Dark Moon series underway along with several shorts.

It’s definitely going to be a busy year for me, but I’m looking forward to it. :D

Well, you are a young whippersnapper. (grin)

So, how do you keep track of everything? That sounds like a lot of irons in the fire. (grin)

I’m so impressed by ‘how’ much you write. How many words do you average a day to be so prolific?

  10. Adrianne Brennan on January 28th, 2009 3:50 pm

Marci, I take everything one day at a time, and I do find that multitasking helps my Muse. Working on only one project tends to burn me out and I wind up taking longer to finish as a result. Having different WIPs going keeps me fresh.

And that one day at a time thing keeps me from pulling out my hair. ;) This is not my full time job and I have that one to worry about too!

  11. Adrianne Brennan on January 28th, 2009 3:51 pm

Hi Susan! Anywhere between 500-5k depending on how much time I have that day to write. I try to write on weeknights after work, but some days I have long work hours so I keep it to the weekends. I can get a lot done in one sitting if I have the hour or two to spend on it.

I also look forward to vacations. :)

  12. Margaret Tanner on January 28th, 2009 9:55 pm

    Hi Adrianne,

Great interview. Loved the excerpt too. You certainly are prolific when you write. I can barely manage 500 words some days.
    Regards
    Margaret
