Holiday Traditions

The holidays are here and once Halloween is done, it seems like everyone is thinking on the holidays. With two children of my own ages 7 and 9, the holidays are a wonderful thing since  they haven’t stopped believing in Santa Claus yet. I started a
tradition  with them of trimming the tree about 2 weeks before Christmas and they make out their Dear Santa letters to mail themselves at the post office as well. With the economy down, I know this year will be a small gift giving for everyone but tradition still runs in many places. It could be getting together for a cookie swap party, meeting with friends for dinner or even  just watching those cute holiday shows you grew up with the family. What is the one tradition that you enjoy with your family and do it each year without fail? Even in these hard times, time with family is everything and that is the  best gift anyone has in my opinion. So my  holiday wish for everyone is to  take the time to kiss your family and friends and enjoy the holidays with good cheer.

When we were growing up, my mom used to give us stencils and a product called glasswax, a liquid cleaner that took different food colorings which we would blend in.
We’d then take a sponge and apply these stencils to the front window: Chanukah menorahs, dreidles, Jewish stars and the words Happy Chanukah. They’d stay up through the eight days of the holiday and then, since the base was a window cleaner, they’d be easy to take off *and* they’d clean the window! :~D
    Clever, my mom.

Growing up, we had to beat our dad at a video game or a card game to open up one present on Christmas Eve. In fact, it’s a tradition we continue to this day. My kids and my nephew now have the joy of defeating one of us adults for the prize.

What great traditions guys. I love that Jeanne. What a clever way to get the window clean. *smiles*

So Cyn…do you get beat at this tradition often?

We start decerating 2 weeks before Christmas, the local fire dept. has a santa claus meet and picture taking we take the kids to and of course, school functions galore. LOL

    Thanks for sharing.

My mother was born on Christmas Eve, so we separate our holiday celebrations very carefully so she isn’t cheated out of a birthday. Now that I’m grown, I always bake her a cake and make sure her birthday presents are not wrapped in holiday paper.

When Dante joined our family, he added his own Xmas Eve tradition of making a huge lasagna, so I can concentrate on decorating the cake I baked the day before. Mom gets quite a feast these days.

The next morning, DH Randy presides over the presents and hands them out one at a time every year. This comes from his family, where he was one of six children. Without someone controlling the flow, there’d be mayhem! LOL!

Speaking of mayhem, if I don’t get back to the pre-Thanksgiving cooking, my cranberry sauce will burn. LOL! Happy Holiday!

Umm, depends. This was back in the Atari days and I ROCKED at Space Invaders! *grins* That said, sometimes we girls would have to play my dad a couple of games until we finally beat him. It was the idea of competition for fun and for results. It’s one of the earliest memories I have of learning that with work comes rewards.

If you’re really good, I’ll share with you the New Year’s Eve drink my mom made us every year. When she passed away in January, we made it that night in her honour. For me, it’ll be the only way to ring in the New Year.
